Choose your trip length, interests, and pace to build a flexible Italy itinerary. Add other destinations, compare experiences, and reserve time for travel between stops.

Suggested trip lengths and day groupings below are our editorial starting points. Your personalized plan will depend on your interests, pace, and dates.
Choose the kind of Italy trip you want
Start with a theme rather than a long list of famous cities. An art-focused trip, a food-focused trip, and a countryside break call for different bases and travel arrangements. Italy's national tourism site offers routes across cities, villages, coast, and mountains. Pick the experiences you would most regret missing, then use those to decide where to spend your time.
A realistic starting point for seven days
Our suggestion for a first city-focused week is two main bases, with a third only if the journeys and your pace make it worthwhile. For example, compare a Rome-and-Florence plan with a three-stop version before adding Venice. These are sample structures, not fixed allocations: Rome may deserve more days if your selected activities are concentrated there. Count arrival, departure, and hotel changes when judging how much sightseeing time remains.
Rail-friendly cities and other connections
Italy's official travel guidance describes high-speed rail connections between major cities. That does not mean every village, coast, or accommodation address is directly served. Check the full journey, including the station-to-hotel leg, rather than just the headline train time. For places outside the main city network, confirm the available local connection before committing to a short stay.
Avoid overlapping bookings
Compare the actual places covered by each tour. A combined admission package and a guided highlights tour may overlap, while two similarly named food experiences may serve different interests. Reserve the least-flexible anchor first and fit smaller activities around it. Do not assume a visitor pass is a saving until you compare its current inclusions with the places you actually intend to visit.
When to add another stop
Add a destination when it contributes enough distinct experiences to justify the transfer. A smaller town can work as a slower overnight stop, but it does not automatically need the same number of days as a major city. The planner proposes allocations from available activities; you can change those allocations when rest, family visits, or independent exploration matter more than bookable experiences.
Browse these experiences as a starting point. The planner considers your interests, pace, and published schedules when building your days.
