Suggested trip lengths and day groupings below are our editorial starting points. Your personalized plan will depend on your interests, pace, and dates.
Choose depth before distance
Japan's national tourism organization publishes itineraries ranging from focused city days to longer cultural routes. For a first visit, our suggestion is to decide how many hotel moves you want before choosing every destination. A week built around fewer bases gives more room to understand each place; a longer trip can support additional stops without turning every other day into a travel day.
A starting outline for a city-focused trip
Compare a Tokyo-and-Kyoto plan first, then decide whether another stop adds enough to justify the journey. That is one possible structure, not a universal best route. Travelers most interested in food, contemporary culture, gardens, or traditional sites may choose different balances. Allocate days around the experiences you select rather than splitting the trip equally by default.
Keep days geographically focused
Treat each city as several possible days rather than one compact attraction list. Choose an anchor experience and build nearby visits around it. A famous stop on the other side of the city may fit better on a different day. Reserve time for finding the correct station exit and meeting point instead of assuming that arrival at a station means arrival at the activity.
Check intercity journeys before booking activities
JNTO's longer cultural routes show how multiple regions can form a connected trip, but a sample itinerary is not a confirmed transport booking. Check your actual travel date, stations, connections, and luggage arrangements. Compare individual tickets with any pass you are considering using the journeys you intend to make; do not buy a pass solely because it appears in someone else's itinerary.
Give the arrival day some breathing room
After a long flight, our recommendation is a flexible first day with an easy-to-change plan. Save tightly timed experiences for when you can reasonably reach them. On later days, mix guided activities with independent time so the itinerary leaves space for the places you discover along the way. Exact seasonal events and operating dates should be checked separately before they become the reason for a hotel or transport booking.

Make room for the trip you want
Start with the number of days you have, then choose an unhurried, balanced, or fuller pace. Review the suggested route before generating your daily plan. Transport allowances are estimates; confirm services and meeting points before booking.
