Choose your trip length, interests, and pace to build a flexible Maine itinerary. Add other destinations, compare experiences, and reserve time for travel between stops.
Planning notes by The Travel Insights · Updated 2026-09-10
Suggested trip lengths and day groupings below are our editorial starting points. Your personalized plan will depend on your interests, pace, and dates.
How much time to allow
We suggest a week for Portland, part of the Midcoast, and an Acadia-area stay. Add days for the inland lakes or far north. The coast rewards slow travel rather than a succession of brief harbor stops.
Choose a connected route
Choose a few coastal bases and leave time for a boat outing or walk at each. Inland mountain and lake areas are a different route. Include the drive between peninsulas, which can be longer than the map suggests.
Where to base yourself
Stay near the harbor or park area relevant to your activities. Portland is not a convenient daily base for Acadia. Compare island accommodation with ferry arrival and departure arrangements before fixing the itinerary.
Before booking
Check seasonal sailings, current park access, and reservation requirements directly. A lighthouse cruise, island ferry, and wildlife outing provide different experiences. Keep one flexible block if a particular boat trip is a priority.
Browse these experiences as a starting point. The planner considers your interests, pace, and published schedules when building your days.
