Plan your trip to Panama

Planning notes by The Travel Insights · Updated 2026-09-10

Suggested trip lengths and day groupings below are our editorial starting points. Your personalized plan will depend on your interests, pace, and dates.

How much time to allow

A week can combine Panama City with one contrasting region. Add time if you want both highland scenery and a separate island stay.

Choose a connected route

Pair the capital and canal-related visits, then choose Boquete or an island area. Bocas del Toro and Caribbean island excursions require different connections.

Where to base yourself

Stay near your preferred city neighborhoods and choose a regional base close to outings. Confirm the final boat or road transfer for remote accommodation.

Before booking

Check island-trip arrangements and what meals, transport, or permits are included. Leave flexibility for weather and avoid treating a long boat excursion as a quick addition before a flight.
