Suggested trip lengths and day groupings below are our editorial starting points. Your personalized plan will depend on your interests, pace, and dates.

Three or four city days

Allow three or four days for Shanghai’s historic streets, skyline, and cultural sights. Add a separate day for a water-town excursion. A relaxed neighborhood afternoon provides useful variety after a substantial museum or observation-deck visit.

Explore one side of the river at a time

Group the Bund with a suitable Huangpu-area walk, and give Yu Garden and the surrounding old-city streets their own block. Plan Lujiazui’s skyline attractions together across the river. Include the crossing rather than alternating between banks for consecutive bookings.

Choose a metro-connected base

Compare the People’s Square area with accommodation elsewhere along a useful metro line. Check which station exit serves the hotel and your airport connection. Large interchanges and road crossings can add time beyond the rail journey itself.

Check what the garden product includes

The Yu Garden area contains shopping streets as well as the historic garden. Confirm whether a tour includes garden admission or only the surrounding district. For major attractions, check identification and reservation instructions before setting out, especially with third-party bookings.
