If you are planning a trip to Arizona to see the beautiful Grand Canyon, don’t forget to make a stop at the Horseshoe Bend in Page, Arizona. It is located approximately 140 miles from both the South and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon; however, it is only 5 miles from the beginning of Grand Canyon National Park. The view from the overlook is amazing and definitely worth the drive and the hike.
How to get there?
From Page, Arizona, you can drive south on Highway 89, and look for the exit lane between milepost 544 & 545 on the west side of the road. The parking area is a short drive from the exit.
What to bring with you?
The hike from the parking lot to the overlook is about ¾ of a mile (about 20-30 minutes); however, depending on the time of the year, this can be pretty tough. Most of the trail is covered in sand which makes it harder to walk. During the summer, the sand can be really hot and while you may want to wear sandals or flip flops, it is not recommended as the hot sand can burn your skin. If you go there in the summer, wear closed-toe shoes.
The red sand can stain your shoes, so make sure you wear something you don’t mind getting dirty. Also, wear something that has a good tread. Part of the rim has railing, most of the edge does not which makes it dangerous for those who try to get closer to the edge to get good pictures.
There is no shade on this trail so make sure you bring a hat and sunglasses along with one or two bottles of water (especially during the summertime). In the winter months, make sure to bring a pair of gloves and a coat as it can get pretty cold. Regardless of the time of the year, make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen to protect your skin from the blazing sun.
How to enjoy the Horseshoe Bend?
As we mentioned before, the Horseshoe Bend is a picturesque location and definitely worth visiting. You can enjoy the Bend three ways:
- You can take an air tour to fly over the Horseshoe Bend
- You can hike all the way to the overlook
- And, you can float down the river in a raft
To find out more about these three options, you can visit the website www.horseshoebend.com and book your trip.
